Welcome to this learning area on the topic of cancer.
Cancer is a very emotive topic. Historically, if a person was diagnosed with cancer there was only little hope of recovery. However, major advances in detection and treatment, such as improved imaging and targeted medicines, now means that cancer is becoming, in some cases, a treatable or a long-term condition.
As a pharmacy professional you have an important role to play in raising the awareness of cancer, its early detection, and supporting those people living with, and surviving, cancer.
Here you will find a wide variety of learning resources to help you increase your knowledge and skills in this area. The resources address the clinical understanding and therapeutics of cancer, and holistic treatments. They will also help to ensure that you demonstrate a patient-centred approach, and shared decision-making, in situations which can be highly emotive for the person affected.

This programme enables pharmacy professionals working across all practice settings to identify people who may have signs or symptoms of cancer and support them to access services that facilitate early cancer diagnosis. The programme also explores the national cancer screening programmes currently available, what people can expect from these and how pharmacy professionals can promote screening uptake.

Advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) are medicines for human use which are based on genes, tissues or cells that offer ground-breaking new opportunities for the treatment of disease and injury. They offer the promise of treating and altering the course of diseases which cannot be addressed adequately by existing pharmaceuticals, offering a lifeline to some patients who have failed all other treatment options.
This series of elearning sessions is designed give the learner a core understanding of cell and gene therapies, the biology involved in these treatments and how they work. The modules take the learner from the basics of cell and gene therapy and different modalities of treatment, through to a more in-depth look at treatments currently being delivered through both commissioned treatment and clinical trials.
e-Learning for Healthcare programmes on End of Life Care to enhance training and education of health and social care workforce
This programme provides an overview of colorectal carcinoma. Working through the programme will help healthcare professionals gain the knowledge required to recognise the signs and symptoms of potential carcinoma and to provide appropriate advice and efficient signposting. The programme also discusses potential treatments and the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach to the care of patients diagnosed with colorectal carcinoma.

You can learn about cancer from the basics to detailed learning. It includes bite-sized videos, animation, quizzes and slide shows. The e-learning is split into four modules and will give you confidence and knowledge which will help you to support your cancer patients from early diagnosis through to treatment. At the end of each module you can test your understanding by completing a short multiple-choice test.

The factsheets have been developed to help pharmacy colleagues in primary care support patients with cancer in the community. They aim to refresh the knowledge of common cancer diseases seen in a community setting and focuses on the following areas: Red flag symptoms - what to look out for with cancers in general, breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, bowel cancer and haematological malignancies.
This e-assessment is linked with the CPPE Cancer: supporting people with early diagnosis programme and assesses you on the learning outcomes within that programme.
